The Philippines was granted independence from the United States on 4th July 1946, under the Treaty of Manila. The Republic of the Philippines would hence celebrate Independence Day on 4th July up until 1961. Presidential Proclamation No. 28 issued by President Macapagal would set forth an annual public holiday every 12th June (the date Aguinaldo proclaimed independence from the Spanish in 1898) as the countries new Independence Day.
This is an interesting year for philately since in a single year (and with only 6 stamps) you can see:
The last postage stamp issued under the Commonwealth of the Philippines (PH 497)
The last official stamp issued under the Commonwealth of the Philippines (PH O44)
The first commemorative postage stamps issued under the Republic of the Philippines (PH 500, 501, 502)
The first definitive postage stamp issued under the Republic of the Philippines (PH 503)
The last year that you will see “United States” printed on Philippine stamps.
