Kicking off the year is a set of 5 (3 postage and 2 air mail) stamps commemorating the 5th JCI (Junior Chamber International) World Congress which was held in Manila from 1st-8th March 1950. JCI Philippines was the first nationally organized leadership development organization established in Asia. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Bureau of Forestry 2 stamps depicting the Red Lauan tree were released. Red Lauan refers to a number of species of large trees with the Shorea Negrosensis being the Philippine endemic variety. Franklin D. Roosevelt appears on a series of 3 stamps celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Philippine Philatelic Association. Roosevelt was apparently an avid stamp collector and he can be seen on these issues with magnifying glass in hand inspecting his collection. A 4th imperforate stamp in green is often seen in collections – these have been cut from the souvenir sheets of this series.
Domestic postage rates increased from 4c to 5c and the difference could be paid using PH 550 in combination with existing 4c stamps. The Manila Lions Club Convention was held in Manila in 1950 and they get 4 stamps (2 postage and 2 air mail issues) and a souvenir sheet. President Elpidio Quirino took office in 1950 and he is depicted taking the oath of office on 3 stamps. 2c and 4 c stamps of this set are very similar in color and can be easy to mix up. The Baguio Peace Conference of 1950 is recognized in a set of 3 x stamps. Lastly, 2 x semi-postal stamps were released raising money for war widows and disabled veterans.
None of the stamps from this year are particularly valuable or scare – the JCI air mail stamps may present more of a challenge but are still easy to obtain if you seek them out.
Note: The information below shows items from my personal collection - it is not intended to be a catalog of all other philatelic products that were released during this year.
